International Schools and Education

We were approached by a previous client who sat on a board of governors of an international school. She explained the recent issues that had occurred at the school regarding the teaching staff. It was clear that training was needed - in management generally and, specifically, in HR issues. As the school operated to the British curriculum, it was appropriate to treat staff as if they were in the UK, despite local labour laws applying. We were asked to put together a solution to support team leaders and the senior leadership team.

Our solution:

  • We devised a 2-day management programme including appraisal skills, giving and receiving feedback, leadership styles, managing ourselves and delivering difficult messages for all staff
  • The programme was run as an inset day for teachers in the school
  • We designed a 1-day programme for the senior leadership team on grievance and disciplinary procedure handling
  • We offered to review the schools Policy on grievance and disciplinary and offer feedback.

The outcomes:

  • Staff were given tools to manage their teams while enabling them to manage their own priorities
  • Delegates were given a safe and supportive environment to practice giving and receiving feedback
  • The school’s grievance and discipline procedure was clearly communicated to staff at all levels, including the correct appeals procedure
  • Practical skills such as time management tools were introduced and teachers are using the “takeaways” as their day-to-day practice
  • We have since worked with British international schools in Qatar, Spain and Italy as a result of referral
